Race is a term used to described the divisions among people based on their biological and genetic makeup. These distinct differences allow people to determine someones race based on just looking at them. Genes makeup many of the different features that exist on the planet such as skin color, eye color, and facial features. These human variants make people have similarities but also differences. Although we are able to find differences between different groups of people this cannot all be placed under the broad term of race. Race is more of a concept than it is a scientific term. It helps people make sense of the differences that exist between one another. The videoThe Power of an Illusion explains that "there is as much diversity between one group of people as there is between a different race". I believe that race is so important because people feel that they are more strongly connected to their own race. But it is simply a social belief that is not always the case. The quote "People in different parts of the world still utter different sounds, but nowadays they say more or less the same things everywhere" explains how people are more alike than they are different. The term race is a word that has developed by people to cause more division amongst one another. It is not scientifically proven that having a different biological makeup puts people into the category of belonging to a separate race.

Race developed from terms similar such as “type” or “kind” and began to be used to describe human’s superficial features (Smedley, 1997).  The “Power of Illusion” video listed these features as: skin, body shape, hair form, and eye shape. There are physical and noticeable differences among people leading to the development of “race” as an easy way to categorize these divisions. However while the term was originally used to categorize physical differences it also began to be applied to internal features such as musical ability, intelligence, athleticism etc.

While we now know that the scientific notion of race does not exist many still use the term as such, incorrectly. Our society has become obsessed with race beginning by using to justify inequalities and now still as a way to begin to amend the wrong doings associated with race in the past. Race is a term that will continue to exist as long as it being used to describe any biological differences. Not until it is accepted as widespread fact that human DNA differences is not related to physical features, the term race as a descriptor will be used.
