What causes Depression?  Please utilize the theories outlined in the text within your response.

There are many theories, but no one really knows what causes depression. The amine hypothesis proposes that people who suffered from depression did not have enough amines, particularly Norephinephrine (NE) in their synapses. If you increase NE you diminish depression.

What Are the symptoms of depression? The depressed person may also have inappropriate guilt, recurrent thoughts of death, fatigue most of the day, and feelings of worthlessness (p. 83)

Currently which class of antidepressants are approved to treat Major Depressive Disorder? How do the class of medications differ from one another?

There are a number of classes of Anitdepressants.

Monoanime Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)

Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs)

Selective Serontonin Inhibitors (SSRIs)

They differ in side effects, and in their function.

Depression consists of one experiencing a depressed mood or one when one has had a lost interest in activities that they have normally enjoyed. Depression may be caused by biological, psychological, social, cultural or religious factors. There are different symptoms of depression depending on how severe ones depression is. For example, one may define symptoms of major depressive by experiencing increase or decrease in sleep, fluctuation in weight, problems concentrating, decrease in sex drive, and loss of interesting in things individuals previously enjoyed doing. When treating individuals with antidepressants, there may be better outcomes for individuals who are experiencing more symptoms due to the medications focusing on the particular symptoms. MOA inhibitors may be a form of treatment for individuals who are experiencing depression. This form of treatment may not be used with individuals who have history of liver disease, who have hypertension, who has history of heart failure, or who has a history of substance/alcohol use/abuse. Tricyclic antidepressants may also be used to assist individuals with depression. TCA may cause individuals to experience different side effects such as weight gain, constipation, and blurred vision. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are also another form of antidepressants that may be able to treat depression. These antidepressants have fewer side effects than other antidepressants.
