Microsoft Access is used to build relational databases. Queries are used to ask questions of data that is stored in tables. These queries can pull data from one table or they can pull data from multiple related tables.
•You would use a select query to select and display data from one or more related tables. An example of a select query would be to select the name, phone number and address of clients.
•Update queries are used to update data in tables. For example, with a product table, an update query could be used to update all of the prices by 10 percent or update contact addresses when an office moves.
•Append queries allow you to append, or add, on additional data from a different database or spreadsheet. An example of using an append query is receiving a spreadsheet with monthly sales information and appending that data into the database.
•These queries allow the user to enter the criteria to display in the query. This criteria is flexible and can change every time the query is run. Examples of parameter queries are entering dates to displays payments due for the month and entering a student name to see all of the courses taken.
•These allow for basic math functions to be performed on data. These functions include sum, average and count. Examples of aggregate queries include summing sales commissions and counting attendees.
