Kivi, R. Solan, M. (2017). What is kidney failure? Kidney Failure. https://www.healthline.com/health/kidney-failure#overview1
This article is very important in this research because it explains kidney failure and how people are becoming apart the illness. From the author’s information kidney disease is caused by many different health factors. In this article the author’s discusses five different types of kidney disease, treatment for kidney failure and how to prevent kidney failure. The author’s also discusses dialysis and kidney transplants options for patients in end stage kidney failure.
Arbor, A. (2015). Kidney disease on the rise, but patients on dialysis or with kidney transplantation lives longer. Michigan Medicine. http://www.uofmhealth.org/news/archive/201501/kidney-disease-rise-patients-dialysis-or-kidney
Arbor who is the author of this article talks about how people are living longer with kidney failure. In detail the article discusses research indicating that the growth rate in the number of deaths has declined. Across the United States over 700,000 people was being treated for renal failure in 2014. The article addresses prevention and awareness of the chronic disease and how diagnosis can be tested in the early stages of the disease.
Nordvist, C. (2017). Dialysis: All You Need to Know. MedicalNewsToday. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/152902.php
This article is written by Christian Nordvist who talks about how dialysis replaces a non-functional kidney. The article also discusses that many patients depend on dialysis for the survival. Dialysis patients must be careful about how much fluid they are in-taking and follow a special diet. There are different adverse effects from dialysis and he discusses in more detailed that the disease is a serious condition. In a normal life span most patients can live at least twenty years. .This article is important to me because I have family members who live with the disease. The author mentions that many patients are living normal lives just as others with continuing dialysis treatments.
Konner, K. (2005). History of vascular access for hemodialysis. Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation. https://academic.oup.com/ndt/article/20/12/2629/1924789/History-of-vascular-access-for-haemodialysis
This article discusses the timeline of how hemodialysis got started. The timeline starts around the 1890’s. Hemodialysis was not well known of until later years. The author discusses the first dialysis hemodialysis machine and talks about how the treatments were performed. There are many facts based in this article that discusses the importance of vascular access and the history behind the vascular surgeon who put forth the effort to make it possible for people to live with kidney failure.
Whitehead, N. (2015). Most Dialysis Patients Aren’t Receiving The Best Treatment. SHOTS Health News from NPR. . http://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2015/06/25/417197790/most-dialysis-patients-arent-receiving-the-best-treatment
Whitehead discusses that only a certain percentage of dialysis patients are getting their dialysis treatments in the most appropriate method. The author talks about how patients will live longer if they have surgery to have a fistula implanted under the skin. In the article he explains more people could live longer if they chose to do dialysis the proper way. There are over 15,000 people that die each year from wrong method of dialysis. The article goes into detail on how to avoid dialysis crashes and how to avoid the emergency of a catheter implantation.
Stang, D., McCrea, M. (2015). Kidney Transplant. Healthline. https://www.healthline.com/health/kidney-transplant
A kidney transplant is very important to the patient, it consist of a surgical procedure that is used to treat kidney failure. The author’s discusses how patients are qualified for the transplant and the doctor recommends rather are not a patient is a good candidate. The article discusses many factors that may prevent a patient from a transplant. A kidney can be donated by a live or dead person. Many patients have received a kidney from a family member or friend but it depends overall on the person and antibodies to be perfectly matched. The transplant can’t be done if your blood forms antibodies in response to the donor’s blood. You have what is called a “negative cross match” if your blood shows no antibody reaction. This means that the transplant can proceed. I will be discussing options in my research.
