Week Two Instructor Guidance
Welcome to Week Two of Child and Adolescent Development
This week we will turn our attention to physical development. When you think about the physical changes that occur in just the first two years of life, it is pretty amazing! You will begin creating your Community Child Development Center this week by exploring activities that will enhance the physical development of young children. These activities will be incorporated into the Infant, Early Childhood, and Adolescent rooms of your final proposal. If you have not done so already, please go now to the Week Five Assignment tab and review the final project requirements carefully. Reach out to me if you questions or are at all confused.
This week we will also begin our “Reading Reviews.” In a theory based course like this one, there is a lot of information to absorb. The purpose of the Reading Review is to help you know that you have mastered the material for the week. The Reading Review will present you with 20 multiple choice questions from the week’s assigned reading. You have unlimited time to complete the review, and you are encouraged to use your book to complete the task. If when you turn in your first attempt you are not happy with the result, you may try again. There will also be a few questions about citation and plagiarism just to reinforce your knowledge of APA.
Physical Development
One of the biggest threats to our children’s physical development is the explosive rise in obesity. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents over the past 30 year. The implications for the physical health of the youth of our nation are staggering. While lack of exercise is part of the problem, the changes in what and how we eat is at its core. While we have made great strides to improve the actual safety of our food (we are less likely today to get food poisoning or other deadly diseases because of the way that we process and handle our food), we have become somewhat of a processed food nation. The immediate benefit is the fact that we can eat food without really thinking about whether or not it is going to kill us. However, the long-term consequence of these processed foods can lead to obesity, heart disease, and other life- threatening illnesses. View the short video below:

As Jamie Oliver stresses in this TED talk (transcript included), there are three main areas in which food health needs to be taught: at home, at school, and on “main street” (which is where we get our food – restaurants, grocery store, etc). In the video, were you surprised that the children didn’t even recognize the vegetables he held up?? Did YOU recognize all of them?
Safety
Have your parents or grandparents ever questioned your actions by saying something along the lines of, “When I was a kid, we didn’t even have seatbelts and I was just fine!”? We’ve all heard some variation of this terrifying statement and wondered whether our lives have changed for better or worse because of constantly changing (improving?) safety restrictions – especially for children and teens.
Reflect on why you think those changes are being made each day… can you think of any reasons off of the top of your head? We have all sorts of safety rules, including safety standards for:
Food Carseats Cribs Busses Schools Workplace Homes Cars Sports Stadiums Planes
…and more!

What brings about new and updated safety standards in each of these (and other) areas? Well, injuries and fatalities, for the most part.
In 2011, over 11 million cribs were recalled because drop-side cribs were found to have caused over 10,000 deaths due to strangulation (Yeh, et. al., 2011). Although many millions of children did survive (like you, or your parents and grandparents), it is because of this overwhelming trend of fatalities that new laws were put into place. This is a statistic which perfectly demonstrates a good example for your discussions this week.

Discussion— We have just one topic this week - Child and Adolescent Safety Statistics. Find information about how safety regulations have changed over the past few decades and comment on those changes. Provide a couple of examples of specific safety rules that exist now, which perhaps did not exist when you (or your parents/grandparents) were a child. Find three statistics from this current decade which are related to safety. For example, you could list rates of injuries/fatalities due to certain safety concerns. You could list statistics related to how many children are saved by certain measures. You could say something about how many new safety guidelines there are in a particular area.
Reading Review—Don’t forget to go to the reading review and complete the 25 questions from the reading this week.
Written Assignment—Submit your two to three page (excluding title and reference pages) paper on physical development activities for three of the rooms in your Community Child Development Center. Remember to review the assignment tab for details. This assignment also requires that you to submit the paper to the Writing Center for Feedback. If you can get your paper done early in the week, then you will have the feedback for this week’s submission. If you cannot, then be sure to incorporate all feedback from the Writing Center as you include these activities in your final proposal.
