Avoiding News Bias |
You are an education reporter for the Town Times, a daily newspaper in your community. You are assigned to look into a story, that the high school is collecting $50,000 from the state each year to offer a basic auto-repair course as part of its curriculum. You understand there is no such course offered. The money is being used to pay general expenses at the high school. An “Auto Club” is offered weekly for a dozen students after school. Your conflict comes in from being a long-term friend of the teacher, Riley Frederickson, who is advising this club. The state would require repayment of the $50,000 if there is no auto-repair course, and Auto Club does not meet the curriculum standards. Assuming there is no one else on the newspaper staff to cover this story, how do you proceed? What do you do to avoid bias and deliver the “facts” of the story to your readers? Do you interview or ignore your friend, Riley? Draw as appropriate from information in Chapter 8 of the textbook.
Your initial post should be at least 250-300 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7.
