Background information and plan:

The article titled “Kentucky Writers in Kentucky” and published in the Appalachian Heritage journal critically analyzes the culture of literacy. The article outlines the status of Kentucky and the fragmentation associated with the state. The author indicates that public silence is an issue public interest. Despite the fact that Kentucky has sufficient books and writers, its human culture is deplorable (Berry, 2015). He cites the constitution and bill of rights as classical examples of immeasurable examples that exist in Kentucky. The author indicates that keeping this heritage viable requires capable culture of writers, writers of books and readers of books.

Thesis Statement: Kentucky does not have sustainable human culture because very few books are reviewed in Kentucky, none of books published in Kentucky contribute to public discussion and there is significant public silence.

· There is significant fragmentation in Kentucky which is cultivated by the silence that hovers over the people Kentucky.

· The state has not instituted public forums where public dialogue can take place. This silence should be an issue of concern to Kentucky writers.

· Kentucky writers write articles and books that only benefit schools and other institutions rather than contributing in public conversation.

· While many books about Kentucky are written each and every year, only few of them are reviewed in the state.

· “And yet when a Kentucky book is published it enters into a public silence, similar of course to such silences in other states, but in origin and character peculiarly our own” (Berry, 2015)
