Dilemma 1 – Bikini versus Burkini

Which of the following opinions expresses how you feel about culture and dress codes?

A. I think that people should be allowed to wear whatever they like, within the bounds of common decency, even if it causes suspicion or discomfort to others

B. I think that each society should be able to enforce their own laws on what people can or can’t wear, and anyone living in that society is obliged to accept those laws

C. I am really not sure about this issue

Dilemma 2 – Cake Stand The owner of a cake shop receives a request from a gay couple for a wedding cake with two figures (of the same sex) kissing on the top. The owner belongs to a religion that does not accept homosexuality and decides to refuse the job. Is this:

A. Perfectly justified: as a small business owner, they have the right to serve whoever they choose

B. Bad for business: one’s personal values shouldn’t get in the way of who one serves as a customer

Dilemma 3 – Building Bridges or Walls? Conflicts and economic imbalances in different areas of the world can cause large movements of people to neighbouring countries. What should our priority be in dealing with mass migration?

A. We should open our borders to anyone who says they need refuge from conflict or persecution; the legitimacy of their claims can be assessed later

B. We should increase border controls, in order to keep out the opportunists, economic migrants and terrorists

Reflective Task 1 The first writing task is to:

DESCRIBE the most memorable events of the first three weeks of Global Perspectives (Lead Event I, Discussion Groups). This is an individual formative submission. The aim is to provide a factual description of events and avoid judging or evaluating.

You must write a minimum of 400 words.

The deadline for submission is 23:59 on Friday 12th October (end of Week 3), via Blackboard.

You will receive feedback from your discussion group tutor. This writing can be adapted for use in the final assessment.
