WEEK 1 EBP POST DISCUSSION REPLY
Evidence-Based Practice ( Aliegka)
Hello class!
Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) has changed nursing tremendously, most especially in patient's outcomes. Florence Nightingale discovered a way through practice to minimize resulting infections and death through sanitation and good hygiene of the soldiers during the war (Houser, J.,2015). Nurses today are required to follow the same code or process which “requires the nurse to gather evidence before planning an intervention and subsequently guides the nurse to evaluate the effectiveness of care objectively” (Houser, J., 2018, pg. 11).
Research is the collecting of information about a particular subject (Merriam-Webster, 2018.) Research in nursing is a process that uses rigorous guidelines to produce unbiased, trustworthy answers to questions about nursing practice. Evidence based practice is the use of the best scientific evidence, integrated with clinical experience and incorporating patient values and preferences in the practice of professional nursing care (ANA, 2016). Research is applied to nursing beginning by identifying a problem that would be best addressed by a review of evidence (Houser, 2018.) Researchers will collect information to apply towards solving a problem. Combining the research with clinical judgement and patient values and preferences allows the combination of research and evidence based practice to evolve into daily nursing practice to achieve desired outcomes.
A historical breach of ethics occurred during the period of 1939 to 1946 during World War II (ANA, 2016). The Manhattan Project was research and development period that produced the first nuclear weapons. Experiments were conducted under very high levels of secrecy, and involved exposing humans to plutonium, uranium, polonium and americium. Thirty human subjects were injected with these substances, and most of the physicians were also unaware of what they were injecting. Records show only one test subject signed a consent form, but it did not fully explain the risks associated with it.
Ethical researchers have a number of criteria that must be met. I would ensure the care of a study participant by obtaining proper and informed consent. I would make sure the individual knew all the risks and benefits of the experiment so they can make in informed decisions whether to undergo the research study. They would be able to ask questions, and reserve the right to withdraw from the experiment without any consequences (Houser, 2018.)
