My Repose:
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Marlow,
First, I would like to thank you for taking your time and reaching out to me about your concerns about Destini’s education. Destini is a extremely bright student, and I always enjoy working with her. So far, so good. She is making tremendous progress in her academics.
I want to start by reviewing and enlightening you on some terms and educational rights regarding Destini’s education. Destini has been identified as having learning disabilities as per the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Therefore, she is entitled to certain rights, including the Free Appropriate Pubic Education (FAPE). In FAPE, free means that all eligible students are educated under public expenses and that the parent is not required to make any additional pay for their children’s education (Osborne & Russo, 2003). Appropriate means that each child is entitled to receive an education that is individualized to meet and fit their personal needs.
Additionally, the education should be provided following the IEP. The public implies that this free and appropriate education is received in a public school setting. Education is the learning offered and delivered to the eligible disabled child (Latham, 2015). FAPE helps special needs students like Destini prepare for further education, employment, and even independent life.
Destini has specific learning disabilities, hence her eligibility for an individualized Education Plan and IEP. As a team, we have developed goals that we consider helpful for Destini. These goals help address her difficulties in reading comprehension and focus on improving her grades from C.
You have expressed your concerns on whether Destini is indeed receiving the appropriate education. Destini’s team, together with me, are working hard to ensure that Destini is receiving all the necessary services to help in her IEP goals and eventually see her grow. I can assure you that you will see great progress in her.
Are the worksheet and reading activities that I sent home for Destini working? In case they are not, kindly let me know when we can schedule a conference to go over the materials that you think are the most helpful to Destini. Currently, the work being sent home is grade-level and has significantly helped in developing Destini’s EIP. She has shown great improvement and progress, and I believe that her grades have room for improvement.
In case you still feel concerned, and you disagree, kindly feel free to reach out to me and help us get Destini the help you believe she needs. In the meantime, the team and I will continue using the IEP and rendering services she is entitled to. I will also continue to send homework that I feel will help Destini while she is at home. Please continue reaching out to me with concerns and recommendations, and I will do my best to serve Destini’s needs.
Yours sincerely,
Mary Garcia.

As a parent, what do you think are some other questions that they may have throughout the rest of the school year? What are some questions that you would ask if you were them? One major question comes to mind for me. If she continues to get A's, will her IEP need to be reevaluated earlier than expected? Being that she has an A, will she not need the support that she is given this year when she moves to the next grade?

Hi Mary,
Let’s flip the script. If you were Destini’s parent what questions might you ask the teacher?

Dear Mary,
Thank you for sharing your letter to Destini's parents. I believe that your description of FAPE is very clear and easily understandable. I appreciate you highlighted the 'Free' part of the FAPE, explaining to parents that the special education services and extra support offered to their daughter will not affect their family budget, as it is provided at no cost for students with disabilities. Many parents may fear the extensive cost of education their child is to receive due to a disability.
