A baccalaureate-prepared nurse is typically a registered nurse that studies at a college or university and earns a degree that prepares the students with the foundations of nursing. The focus of this degree is to help prepare the registered nurse to critically think, problem solve, develop communication skills with patients and their families,  educate, improve patient outcomes, and much more. Baccalaureate degree nurses can work an inpatient and outpatient settings. The master's-prepared nurse needs all of the same skills and qualities a baccalaureate- prepared nurse provides. The Advanced practice nursing is defined as a career pathway for registered nurses, committed to continuing professional development. The advanced practice role requires the application of relevant research and management, knowledge and skills in order to provide high‐quality patient outcomes and ensure implementation of evidence‐based practice (Woo, 2020).

The value of a masters agree in nursing is to help nurses advance their knowledge and skills in a specialized clinical setting. A master’s degree in nursing provides nurses with many different career opportunities. Some of these career opportunities that provide direct patient care are becoming a nurse practitioner, certified nurse-midwife, certified registered nurse anesthetist, or a clinical nurse specialist. According to the reading, the advanced practiced nurse require a license beyond the basic registered nurse license. The role of the clinical nurse specialist requires a master’s degree but does not require separate licensing unless the clinical nurse specialist is applying for prescriptive authority (DeNisco & Barker, 2015). The value in earning a master’s degree not only provides more career opportunities but helps students advance in leadership and professional skills to improve better patient outcomes.

It is essential for the master’s prepared nurse to be able to problem-solve and critically think when it comes to decision making to help provide the best patient outcome and improve the quality of health care. The masters prepared nurse to stay up to date on new and old evidenced based practices that are constantly changing and everchanging. It is important to reflect and be able to work with an interdisciplinary team to come up with solutions that ensure patient safety and health outcomes to all. Lastly, it is important to stay up to date with technology advancements and utilize them when they can benefit our patients.
