Samuel Donhardt

Good Morning Professor and Class,

This week we have been asked to analyze the similarity and differences between a few different colonies. I chose to compare and contrast the settlement powers, forces, and ideas surrounding the Chesapeake colonies as well as the New England Colonies. Through my research, I found the Chesapeake colonies to be founded by a band of English adventurers. They ended up developing a fort against the James River near Chesapeake Bay and eventually unloaded tons and tons of shipments of colonists seeking a different life in the Americas. This then worked its way inland and they settled along the rivers against the coast of Maryland and Virginia. Over time, more and more African people were brought to the Americas to further the development of tobacco profits, at the cost of slavery to these African people. Between Maryland and Virginia’s coasts, it seems peaceful relations were made with the American natives by Virginia. They were Roman Catholic due to the influence from the English Crown. Maryland was known to have no established state religion at this time (Smithsonian, 2022).

The other settlement I have researched is the New England colonies. I have found through this research these colonies were established in the 17th century as previously noted Chesapeake Colonies. New England colonies had relatively cold weather in comparison to others, and as a benefit it limited the spread of certain diseases. A disadvantage to this was the shortening of the growing season due to this cold weather. They had many natural resources such as furs, whales, fish, granite, and lumbar to name a few. Religion wise, most in New England respected Puritanism. They felt the church was too closely associated with the Catholic religion and thought it needed some adjustments (Brooks, 2019).

The Chesapeake Colonies were focused more on the use of slaves for their benefit and the New England colonies did not have this at the time. The former had tobacco due to being more southern of the two colonies and therefore having more humidity to their benefit for the maximum growth of this product. The Chesapeake colonies acknowledged and honored the wishes of their homeland in regards to religion by maintaining the view of Roman Catholicism. New England colonies saw this and disagreed. Both of these places were quite dependent on the environment to be able to survive. Chesapeake was dependent on the humidity for their tobacco and New England was dependent on the cooler climate and the ocean to ensure whales and fish still came by for harvesting.
