Discussion 1

My choice of a research topic is depression. This constitutes a common topic in works of research in classes of psychology. Depression is such a wide subject that avails a number of subtopics to narrow down to. A paper on depression will have a number of issues to consider. Firstly, there is need to determine a proper definition of depression. Most often, there are always times when people become a little sad or blue. Note: depression is different from such moodiness in that it is a medical condition (Howdeshell & Ornoy, 2017).

My research work will dig deeper into the best definition of clinical depression. Secondly, my work will elaborate on the different types of depression. The symptoms showing up in a victim of depression determine the type of depression they might be suffering from. For example, major depression disorder (MDD) lacks a known cause, whereas postpartum depression can be attributed to child birth in women. Furthermore, causes of depression will be established (Howdeshell & Ornoy, 2017).

This is because the causes are numerous and have never been fully comprehended. Also, the paper will look at the population group that is most vulnerable to depression. There are a number of factors that may make one more prone to the condition. Such conditions include: depression history in the family, experiences, gender, and illnesses (Montserrat-Capdevila et al., 2017). Another pertinent issue to be tackled are the depression signs and symptoms. In addition, my research will lay down the procedures of diagnosing depression. Last but not the least; the paper will jot down the treatment options for depression.

Self-Management of Chronic Illness

Chronic disease as being present for more than one year, requiring continued medical attention and intervention, could limit the patient to daily activities, interfere in the family relationship, and become significant stress for both the patient and all family members. Chronic illness can be caused by many risk factors as could be tobacco, alcohol, and drug abuse, poor nutrition, being exposed to extreme diets, sedentary life, and many other risks.

"The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) is an effective self-management education program for people with chronic health problems. It specifically addresses arthritis, diabetes, and lung and heart disease, but teaches skills useful for managing a variety of chronic diseases".(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). Sometimes it is difficult for a person with a chronic illness to express how they feel about what they are going through or be scared about telling someone. They may think that people can judge them, or maybe that no one cares about their illness. Sometimes they fall into a deep depression because they do not have the tools to learn about life and accept their condition. Creating research papers is vitally important; they can find much interesting information to manage the chronic disease's best possible way.

This topic is of great interest to me since in my family, I had two relatives who died due to cancer, a 45-year-aunt with breast cancer metastases to the brain, hip, and lungs, and my grandfather's 81-year prostate cancer. It affected us all as a family. It was a difficult period, and we first had to look for information and investigate it to understand the situation they were going through. Then accept what was happening and learn how to fight against cancer. From my perspective as a nurse, I could notice that they first went through a period of denial, anger, and depression. Thanks to reading many research papers like this, we understood what they were going through and help them manage their disease, It also gave them hope and strength to live happier, and we as the family learned the best way to support them.

My goal with this topic is that people with chronic diseases know the necessary resources to live and deal with their condition and that their relatives be able to understand what they are going through internally, understand and support them throughout their long process. Also, let them know that they can look for support groups with the same condition. Also, they can ask their health care provider where to find helpful research that provides them with the necessary materials to get informed and have a better quality of life. "Participants who took CDSMP demonstrated significant improvements in exercise and ability to do social and household activities. They had less depression, fear, frustration, and worry about their health. They experienced a reduction in symptoms like pain and increased confidence in their ability to manage their condition". (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012)

Discussion 3

The topic I would like to research is chronic illness self -management, understanding about the ways that people incorporate in the consequences of illness into their lives, how can they transition during this process, I believe self-management to be central to the transition process but it would require research. Emphasizing patient responsibility, and acting in concert with the provider community, self-management represents a promising strategy for treating chronic conditions. Moving beyond education to teaching individuals to actively identify challenges and solve problems associated with their illness. Understanding why is so important to look for support and how this can help and inspire people to learn more about their conditions and to take an active role in their health care.

Self-management plays a crucial role in how and in what time frame patients are able to treat many conditions. Self-management is easier for patients to implement when there is only one condition present, yet it becomes even more imperative for those patients who suffer from multiple chronic conditionsFor this research I would like to conduct Quantitative research, which is based in numbers and graphs. It is used to test or confirm theories and assumptions. This type of research can be used to establish generalizable facts about a topic.

Common quantitative methods include experiments, observations recorded as numbers, and surveys with closed-ended questions.

Disucssion 4

ICU nurses are often confronted with critical events from the caring of patients who are exposed to infection because the central line dressing was not changed on the required day or it was found soiled or loose and the nurse does not change it. CLABSIs are preventable, yet they result in thousands of deaths every year with billions of dollars dedicated to addressing these adverse events. In many facilities throughout the country, the number of ClABSIs have increased in recent years, despite efforts to lower its incidence (Ista et al., 2016).

The practice issue is that none maintenance was found in my current practice because the central line dressing was not changed on the required day or it was found soiled or loose and the nurse does not change it. In the future, I’d like to conduct a search by identifying the major elements of my PICOT question and find subject descriptors, MeSH terms, or descriptors that identify the elements of my research. I want to start with a broad search and move to a narrower search with terms for the comparison, outcome, and time factors of my study. By using database filters, I will be able to make the evidence more specific and target the studies I am looking for.

End-of-life care, and palliative care.

When I was asked to talk about this topic, end-of-life care, and palliative care, I was hesitant about where to approach the subject in a way that would offer a clear vision of what palliative care entails, and what its magnitude and significance are. I hope that this approach helps us to reflect and clarify some of our doubts about this very interesting topic, as far as possible.

End-of-life care and palliative care have standards that have changed in recent decades. This is partly due to a lack of understanding of the differences between end-of-life care and palliative care. These differences are very important to the plans and decisions to be made for patients and their loved ones. The concepts of end-of-life and palliative care are similar but not the same.

What is involved in palliative care, is the treatment of people suffering from a serious illness that cannot be cured or a complete reversal of their disease. This type of care specializes in controlling symptoms that have a rapid onset and progression. The purpose of palliative care is to ensure that the patient and her family have an ideal quality of life. End-of-life care is a portion of palliative care that is directed toward the care of persons who are nearing the end of life. End of life is caring for individuals who are in the last year of life, and for legal and health care purposes, normally the last six months of life. End-of-life care is focused on maintaining the quality of life while offering services for legal matters.

I would like to use the qualitative research method for this research. Qualitative research involves collecting and analyzing non-numerical data to understand concepts, opinions, or experiences. It can be used to gather in-depth insights into a problem or generate new ideas for research.

The identified topic of research is on the management of pressure ulcers. When people are admitted to hospitals, the goal is to ensure that they get better and healthier. However, fpr people who prolong their stays at the hospitals, they suffer from pressure ulcers. These are breaks caused upon the skin as a result of prolonged pressure exerted upon it that results in injuries as well as harm caused on the underlying tissue.

According to Reddy, Gill & Rochon, there are adverse effects that are associated with cases of pressure ulcers in hospitals (2016). Among the adverse effects that are related to pressure ulcers are the negative health outcomes and the high cost of management and treatment of the ulcers. According to Thomas (2017), there is still no standard approach that can be used by caregivers in the identification and management of pressure ulcers. However, there are some techniques that were investigated as ways of management such as improving the diet of the patient, avoiding excessive time spent on the bed and finally, constantly assessing the condition of the skin.

The research topic under consideration will be the management of pressure ulcers. The general research question is; how can care givers identify and manage pressure ulcers before they affect the patient? The study will be carried out by an analysis of literature that has been previously written regarding the topic and the proposed ways by the researchers to control pressure ulcers formation. The different results will then be compared and conclusions drawn.
