Historical Concepts & Theories of Leadership
“Grading is important in technical and functional areas, but the distinctiveness and vitality of business
education require that a grading culture be downplayed. Students are there to contribute to and
benefit from a rich learning environment; they are there to be empowered rather than ranked.”

IN CLASS & ONLINE DIALOGUE Guidelines For Effective Cross-Cultural Dialogue & Existence
Source William “Bill” Kondrath’s “Guidelines for Recognising and Valuing Differences”
1. “Try On” – Try and understand others’ background and cultural context and would try on their tastes before discarding them OR introducing yours. If you find that you do not like them then you can always take them off like what you do in the shop when trying on shoes or clothes.
2. “It’s ok to disagree” – Makes it easier not to have malice as it is ok to agree and to disagree and also to say “ouch!” if your callous toe has been stepped on.
3. “Practice self-focus” – Pay attention to personal feelings and personal comfort, also use the word “I” to describe your personal experiences and be aware that these may not be everyone else’s experiences. Also be aware that your “social location” is not every one’s “social location.”
4. “It’s not okay to blame, shame, or attack self or others” – depends on whether you come from a “shame or guilt culture” and this should be straightforward in how this can be effectively used to shut out an idea or get an idea muscled through.
5. “Practice both/and thinking” – Accept that someone’s idea, can run concurrently with another and both can be true. 6. “Notice both process and content” – Process tends to be the “what” and content the “how and why.” 7. “Beware of Intent and Impact” – I have seen that even the best of us at times partake in well intentioned acts, yet the
desired impact read outcome is way off the mark, if not completely the opposite. The story of the monkey taking a salmon out of the water, because the monkey thought that the salmon was wrong in swimming against the tide comes to mind. The monkey had also narrowly survived drowning in those waters, and thought it was doing the salmon a great big favor.
8. “Confidentiality” – Sensitive information that is shared here is shared in confidence and please do not go and share it outside without the contributor’s express approval.

BREAKOUT ROOMS DISCUSSIONS
• Active participation in experiential activities, group reflection, and critical discourse is an essential component of this course.
• Show respect for all members of the class, both in your speech and manner that expands the group’s perspectives.
• Play a part in the shared coordination of the group’s dialogue process.
• Act as a facilitator, maintaining the flow and quality of the discussion, whenever it’s needed.
• Help redirect, or refocus, discussion when it becomes sidetracked or unproductive.
• Make the effort to engage reluctant participants. • And provide helpful feedback and support to others.
ONLINE FORUM AND RESPONSES 15% • Online forum responses are a conversational form of writing that encourages you to think about your own thinking in relation to other people’s thinking. Each post should be minimum 400 and maximum 750 words. • And your 2 responses to any of your classmates should be minimum 200 and maximum 350 words.
What is the best way to do this? • Easy! Post your response in word. You can see the word count as well as any errors in your work. Here is an egsampe of errers. Words highlight with a red underline. Right click the word and correct it. This goes for your written work as well. • Then you can copy your text and paste it into your forum. Please do not post it as an attachment, I have set Moodle so that it will not allow you to do that. • Also, double check that you have the right references for all your citations. Include references at the bottom of your post as you will get marks for this.
• Use one – two sources and credit them using APA
ONLINE FORUM AND RESPONSES 15% Three steps.
1. You are required to post a reflection to a given prompt before the next class. End your post with an open-ended question, there are marks for this.
2. Then, you will have a few days to reflect on your classmates’ answers and respond to TWO of them before the next class.
3. Finally, you will once again respond to YOUR initial post answering any questions posed of you as well as re-posting your response and changing anything that you may have learned in the consequent weeks.

ONLINE FORUM AND RESPONSES 15% Online Forum Responses • Online forum responses are a conversational form of writing that encourages you to think about your own thinking in relation to other people’s thinking. • You are required to post a reflection to a given prompt, and then, make a minimum of two written reply posts to others’ reflections and/or replies. • Remember the prompt can be as controversial as controversial can be, and do not waste your word count fighting that, use your word count to show your academic argumentation, the controversy is given to spark the discussion and to give you room to show your own side of critical academic thinking. • All discussions are linked to historical concepts and theories of leadership, if you find yourself without even having to mention the word leadership in your response then something is very wrong, or you have missed the point of the discussion prompter. • Remember our guidelines for cross-cultural dialogue in your engagement with others in these discussions. In addition, you should also insure that:
FORUM EXAMPLE
• The original posting is of high quality, showing depth of knowledge on the topic. Replies occur under two or more different threads, other than that belonging to the student. Replies are posted on more than one day during the posting period.
HISTORICAL CONCEPTS & THEORIES OF LEADERSHIP ONLINE FORUM AND RESPONSES 15%
• Response posts to peers' original postings are respectful, show clear synthesis and evaluation of the content read, and provides depth, breath, or new insight to the topic. A relevant “critical thinking” question is asked to advance the discussion.
• References are included from scholarly peer-reviewed non-course text or readings to support what is said in both the assignment post and to responsive posts to peers. All posts are clearly written and contain no APA/spelling/grammatical errors.

1. Very basic comments such as “I agree” or “I disagree.”
HISTORICAL CONCEPTS & THEORIES OF LEADERSHIP ONLINE FORUM AND RESPONSES 15% What Substantive Participation is NOT:

Your response to each Case Study should be no more than one page double-spaced (that means, six case studies = 6 pages total). I am looking for an in depth analysis of the questions using concepts learnt. Label each Case Study (i.e. 2.2) and submit all six Case Studies in ONE paper at the end of the last week of the course. Plagiarism Plagiarism has become a huge issue in this class. If you do not know what this means my suggestion is that every time you submit work with words that are not originally yours or you previously submitted for another class without acknowledging the source, then you have plagiarized. I will only allow up to 7% on the familiarity response, anything above that I will be giving a zero for that submission.

Hmmmm??? Why does my mark differ from what Moodle says?
Moodle is a platform where we get information, submit assignments, get them grade with comments. It does not factor in:
• Attendance • Participation
You can control your final mark by making sure you are on time to Zoom class, keep your camera on ALL the time, participate in class discussions when prompted or you need clarification on a concept or have an aha moment, and you post on the forums. 35% of your mark comes from these areas. (See slide 8)
