Strategic HRM

Strategic HRM (SHRM) differs from the earlier practice of personnel management and even

somewhat from the basic practice of human resource management. SHRM values employees as vital

assets of an organization and appreciates that HR policies and practices "need to be coordinated or

linked with the needs of the organization" (Schuler & Jackson, 1999 as cited in Mathis, 2017).

The trend toward SHRM has enhanced the image the executive management of the company has of

HR—that HR can care about not only employees but also understand and assist with the needs of

business. Strategic planning is the process of dening organizational strategy, or direction, and

allocating resources toward its achievement.  The planning process begins with an assessment of the

current state of the business and the environmental forces that may be important during the strategic

planning cycle. Analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) is a common starting point because it allows managers to consider both internal and external conditions that the

business faces. The guiding force behind the strategic planning process is the organizational mission,

which is the core reason for the existence of the organization and what makes it unique.

(Mathis, 2017, p. 45)

An HR department that can do all these things is perceived as a strategic partner of other

departments that obviously contribute to the bottom line and/or growth of the company, and not just

as an employee liaison. If HRM contributes to the company's competitive advantage in the market, all stakeholders will identify HRM as a strategic department that is vital to the success of the company.

HRM resides in a rapidly changing environment of globalization, increasing diversity, and advances in

technology. HR practitioners must be up to date with current trends and developing people strategies

to align with business conditions. Read the following material to discover what’s trending in HR
