According to Bierema (2020), there are three (3) different types of OD consultants (1)
internal or external consultants, (2) management consultants, (3) and managers who apply OD to
their own functional areas (Ch. 1.3). After completing the DISC Personality Test, my results
reflected 40% dominance, 29% compliance, 23% steadiness, and 9% influence. Dominance
describes the way that I deal with problems, assert myself and control situations. Compliance
describes how I approach and organize activities, procedures and responsibilities. Steadiness
describes my patience, persistence, and thoughtfulness. Influence describes the way that I deal
with people, communicate and relate to others. I believe that the test results were somewhat
accurate. Overall, I believe that it would be vital and beneficial to improve and increase these
percentages as these traits are important to facilitate the responsibility of an OD consultant.
Although dominance, compliance, steadiness and influence are critical factors to the role
of an OD consultant, I believe that some of the skills that I have that would apply to the role of
an OD consultant. Some of those skills consist of active listening skills, attentiveness,
confidence, empathy, and leadership. Active listening applies to the role of an OD consultant as
active listening builds strong relationships and would allow me to critically understand the
feelings, thoughts and concerns of a team. Being and practicing activeness would allow me to
pay attention to critical details within the organization; such as monitoring how managers
interact and communicate with their team. Confidence would display a positive attitude towards
leading a team and organization. Empathy would enable me to recognize and understand the
feelings and emotions of others. Lastly, leadership as leader takes initiative to do things that will
be beneficial to and for the team as a whole.
