Step 1
· Conduct research on a potential job of interest. You can use job search sites such as indeed.com, dice.com, usajobs.gov or a job announcement from a current or prospective employer.
· The assignment will be more valuable if you choose a job that you aspire to, not one that you are currently fully qualified for. The announcement should not be from a job you currently or have previously occupied.
· In the event you located the job announcement on a publicly available website (job search site or employer site), please include the URL at the end of the page.
· If you have any questions about whether a job announcement is suitable for this assignment, please post a message in the Ask the Instructor discussion area or email your instructor.
Step 2
· Cut and paste the job description into Word and if it is not already neatly organized into sections with bullet points, you should format the document.
· Once the job announcement is organized and formatted, cut and paste the Job Description Self-Assessment Table (see the file: Job_Description_Self_Assessment_blank.docx) on a new page after the job description.
Step 3
· Complete the Job Description Self-Assessment Table with the specific and relevant Qualifications (skills, experience, education, etc.).
· Change the table titles and add rows as necessary. Your table should have a minimum of 8 rows (qualifications); if 8 rows cannot be generated from the job description you identified, you should choose a different job description.
· Your list of qualifications should include all qualifications listed, whether Required, Preferred or Desired.
· Some job announcements (see the samples) also describe the job itself in terms of very specific skills or roles. Listing these is at your discretion.
Step 4
· Within the table, you should conduct a self-assessment of your own qualifications, item by item, against each row of identified qualifications for the given job posting.
· If you believe you have sufficient qualifications for the given row, indicate ‘Yes’ in the second column and provide a brief, but specific, description in the third column, how you meet or exceed the indicated qualifications.
· If you are concerned that you do not yet have sufficient qualifications for the given row, indicate ‘No’ in the second column and provide a specific description of how and when you intend to attain these qualifications.
Step 5
· After the table, provide a one paragraph overview/observations/narrative about your general suitability/preparedness for the job announcement you have chosen.
Step 6
· Submit your work, both the formatted Job Description and your completed Job Description Self-Assessment table to the Assignments Folder. You should submit only ONE file.
