Hi!
The Surrogate, a movie on Amazon Prime is a film that not only impacted society but is a topic I can personally relate to. The Surrogate is a movie about a gay couple using their best friend to carry their child, one of the most exciting and heartwarming moments in a couples life was immediately shattered when a prenatal test came back positive for Down syndrome.
The film shows all of the questions, decisions, and thought process the couple goes through about whether or not to take the pregnancy to term or terminate it. How could a couple who took the route of using a surrogate to have a child want to terminate the pregnancy due to the child being disabled? Though you might think no one could possibly go through with terminating a pregnancy for non-life threatening reasons, some people do. It’s a touching subject because of course everyone prays their child is healthy but when you find out they will not be, what do you do?
This film points out the reality and thoughts that you wouldn’t want anyone to know. My sister had a Down syndrome scare with her first child and even though the doctor of all people advised her to terminate her pregnancy, she did not. Now I have a healthy three year old niece with no disabilities what so ever. I believe this film opened people’s eyes and mind of how the fear of not having a healthy child or the fear of how other people will judge them keeps couples from finishing a pregnancy to term.
