Ideal job design should satisfy the requirements of an organization and the position holder. This element is essential in the sense that it influences the level of work satisfaction and overall output per worker. Thus, a good work design should conform to the Job Characteristics Model, which defines the properties that make a job motivating (Louis, 2016). Given this framework, it is easier to analyze why working as a data entry clerk was not exciting.
Primarily, the data entry job requires good typing, knowledge of database software, and crucial numeric entry skills. These characteristics define the prerequisite requirements for an excellent data entry operator. As such, it lacks in skill variety, which makes the job repetitive; hence, monotonous (Galaxy Art Publishers, 2019; (Louis, 2016). Consequently, it is necessary to broaden the scope of data entry clerks to include tasks, such as field data collection, entry, analysis, and presentation to make it wholesome. Because the job lacked these elements, it was basic, less challenging, and inherently dull.
By focusing on a specific element of data processing, treatment, and analysis, a data clerk job lacks task identity. Data treatment is a chain of processes starting from field to presentation in an office. Therefore, data entry work focuses on a single process along the chain; hence, it lacks a clear begging and end. Mainly, it involves personnel confined to an office with a computer programmed with database software (Galaxy Art Publishers, 2019). In this way, it does not include fieldwork and presentation before relevant stakeholders.
While data entry job has task significance in the sense that it simplifies the work for data analysts, it is deficient in autonomy. More specifically, data entry operators must follow instructions specified by data analysts and the organization regarding data format and variables of interests (Galaxy Art Publishers, 2019). Thus, data clerks cannot independently define new procedures, which make the job less-motivating.
Lastly, there is a close working relationship among data entry clerks, field officers, and data analysts who must jointly for smooth processing of information. On this aspect, the former receives a substantial amount of feedback, which makes the task somehow motivating. Nonetheless, this job designation satisfies only two elements out of five of the Job Characteristics Model, implying that it is not motivating at all.
