Best Ways to Prevent and React to Discipline Problems

Jill Hare Teacher’s Blog/online article

2013 (listed for website publication only)

Focuses on two key strategies teachers need to maintain order in the classroom: reactive and proactive approach to discipline. By being proactive the teacher can enforce self-discipline, avoid arguing, communicate etc. and by being reactive a teacher must stay calm when a student has an outburst and create behavior plans to make sure defiant students are following directions and paying attention in class.

10 Ways to Stop Bad Behavior in the Classroom

E.B. Carle Blog February 26, 2011

The ten ways to stop bad behavior based on this blog would be: find the leader and then set an example for them, make rules clear for day 1, be consistent with discipline, be physically close to the problem, see each student as individual, try different discipline approaches, don’t be a student’s friend, be the adult, don’t reward misbehavior, only punish everyone as a last resort.

How to Handle Disrespectful Students

Michael Linsin Blog July 31, 2009 It is important to handle disrespectful students with calmness, as it will assist in preventing it from happening in the future. Students will calm down if they see the teacher is calm and gaining their respect is by being honest and saying things to the student that you mean.

Behavior and Classroom Management Strategies for Reading Teachers

Chris Borgmeier

PowerPoint No date listed The creator of this PowerPoint presents principles of behavior management stating that effective teachers promote responsible behavior and recognize that misbehavior comes from an underlying occurrence or reason, which could change response to misbehavior. Teaching misbehaving students appropriate behavior and preventing students from practicing bad habits that lead to misbehavior will assist in eliminating lashing out inside and outside the classroom.

Classroom management: classroom discipline

Margot McCamley

Blog/Article Site Published by: Macmillan Publishers Ltd. 2000-2013

Using proper behavior patterns to lead students to follow good behavior in the classroom is important for a successful classroom. It is our job as teachers to realize if a student is on task with what is being taught or not and we must implement discussion and

group activities to keep those students on task and not resort to bad behavior and lashing out because of boredom or misinterpretation of the content in the lesson plan.

Parent Education: A Classroom Program on Social Learning Principles

Richard A Dubanoski and Gilfred Tanabe

Journal January 1980 This journal presents a study performing a nine-week parent education program giving them a classroom format to show parents effective methods of social learning theory to follow proper child behavior development in the home to translate into the classroom. This study will show whether this method will prevent childhood behavior problems and change parent behavior to show their children best behavioral practices.

Preventing Serious Antisocial Behavior in Inner-City Children: An Empirically Based Family Intervention Program

Patrick H. Tolan and Mary McKernan McKay

Journal April 1996 The study presented in this article focuses on a 22-week family intervention set and designed to prevent antisocial behavior in the inner-city classrooms, specifically with minority groups. The family intervention

is supported by the Metropolitan Area Child Study, which focuses on reducing aggressive behavior in the inner- city group of students.

Literature Socialization in a Kindergarten Classroom

David Poveda Journal 2003 A set of classroom patterns and behaviors become correlated with theoretical pre- specified instructional goals through process- product research, as Poveda explains the socialization of literature for students at a young age (2003, pg. 235). While this article highlights on storytelling in kindergarten and socialization for children into literacy language, it does not pertain to my proposed action research study of preventing bad behavior in the classroom.

Early Adjustment, Gender Differences, and Classroom Organizational Climate in First Grade

Claire Cameron Ponitz Sara E. Rimm- Kaufman Laura L. Brock

Journal December 2009

A study was presented observing classroom organization as a reflection of performance in the classroom. The study showed that those classrooms with less chaos allotted for more focused children and better overall grades, participation while also taking gender differences into

account as boys had more of a difficult time adjusting to the new atmosphere and assignments in a first grade classroom.

Classroom Roles and School Adjustments

Ronan Van Rossem and Marjolijn Vermande

Journal December 2004

This journal article focuses on studying the integrations of children into a classroom setting and how their adjustment plays a strong role in how well they do in the classroom and in congruence with their peers. The study of multiple first grade classrooms uncovers what the differing roles are in the classroom associating with school adjustment more so.

I noticed in my Google search that within the first five results of my search, were

blogs and teacher’s thoughts and practices, while in my Ashford Library Search all

journal articles were within the first five results of my search. This shows that the

Ashford Library came up with more concrete sources with proposed valid studies and

results from those studies in accordance to a hypothesis, whereas the Google search

consisted of, although more current information, a more opinion based set of rules and

information to prevent bad behavior in the classroom. I would have to choose the

journal article from my Ashford Library Search Parent Education: A Classroom Program

on Social Learning Principles by Richard A Dubanoski and Gilfred Tanabe and I preferred

Week 2 Assignment: Literature Review Matrix that the study involved in this article took a differing approach to preventing behavioral

issues in the classroom, by including parents as an integral part of that prevention and

maintenance of good and proper behavior. Although the study was done in 1990, I can

further search for current articles that present similar studies in the modern era of

education and the role of the parent in their child’s behavior in the classroom and with

their peers and superiors.

I would also choose the PowerPoint presented by Chris Borgmeier PhD.,

Behavior and Classroom Management Strategies for Reading Teachers as it presented

principles of behavioral management stating that effective teachers promote

responsible behavior and recognize that misbehavior comes from an underlying

occurrence or reason that we as teachers must pin point and reverse into proper

behavior. The PowerPoint presentation was for a lecture/lesson plan at Portland State

University and is a great source of general knowledge and theories that Professor

Borgmeier actively presets to his students and may play an important part in my initial

search and understanding of classroom behavior and preventative methods for

misbehavior. I searched the key statement “preventing bad behavior in the classroom”

and I noticed that in my Ashford Library Search on JSTOR I may need to limit the phrase

to a few key words in order to retrieve more sources that align with my search. What I

also noticed from my search on JSTOR was that if my search is not concrete and held to

a few key words I receive articles that have nothing to do with my topic. I now know to

limit my search to key words for more specific articles pertaining to my action research

project, while in a Google search I will try to avoid Blogs as sources and only reference

Comment [N1]: Great mapping back to your original topic

Comment [N2]: fantastic article. It seems to match your study perfectly

Week 2 Assignment: Literature Review Matrix journal’s, article’s, and online book’s primarily. Also, I will make sure to limit my choice

in sources to educational sites ending in .edu, .gov, and .org in my future research. I will

utilize some of the sources above in my action research project as initial tools and as a

base of information making sure not to take a bias or follow a common pattern, while

presenting my study as a comparison to certain studies and results informed by other

sources.
