Week 1 Application Assignment: Effective Group Leadership Skills
Overview
This week, you examined the types of group and group work, group dynamics, and effective group leadership skills. This assignment will help you to clarify and illustrate your understanding of these areas. You should also listen to the lecture, review supplemental materials, and use the rubrics as guides to help you complete the assignment. This assignment will count toward your final grade and is worth 75 points.
Directions
Part I
Reflect on your philosophy of leadership. Describe your personal leadership qualities as they relate to your philosophy.
How does your philosophy fit the group leadership styles and personal qualities of effective group leaders?
Discuss the three styles of leadership and the type of group that you believe are most compatible with each. What are the similarities and differences?
Part II
According to Gladding (2016), a prerequisite to becoming an effective leader is “learning which strategies and roles to employ in conflict situations and when” (p. 69). In fact, five specific techniques for managing conflict in groups are described.
· Which of the leadership strategies for managing conflict do you prefer?
· When have you used this strategy?
· Which of the strategies do you least prefer and what makes it unattractive for you?
