We’ve learned of the positive and negative effects of technology on public administration throughout the semester and although it can be extremely helpful in areas such as dissemination of information to citizens, open government, big data and so much more, I believe the biggest effect will be security and protecting citizens’ and governments’ privacy. The world has been functioning more virtually, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic hit, and more people are using internet services to either run businesses or complete transactions as consumers. With more personal information online now than before, it heightens the chance for security breaches and cyber attacks putting this information at risk and susceptible to fraudulent activity. Not only will public administrators have the task of securing citizens information, but that of their own businesses/services. As we read earlier in the semester in the case of Rita Crundwell, a city employee who embezzled $53 million for her own personal use over the course of 20 years, internal fraud and embezzlement are also very real threats to the government and citizens.
When President Joe Biden was moving into the White House and wanted to bring his Peloton bike, but modifications to the bike would have to be made due to cybersecurity reasons. “To make the bike White House friendly, the camera and the microphone in the table would have to be removed” and “Mr. Biden to pick a nondescript user name and change it every month, and keep the bike far from any place where there might be sensitive conversations” (Stolberg, 2021).

Over the course of this semester, we have spent time discussing the promise and perils of IT in government. Now at the end of the semester there have been many positive and negatives feedback from using thee technological advancements that we have learned. Some of these promises and perils of IT in government have helped out the government and has provided big effects on public administration going forward. This can be viewed through the use of open government and security protection. These two aspects have made effects in public administration going forward because with the use of open government in place it allows citizens and the government to be able to communicate their needs and how they aim to achieve these needs. As well as security protection, this is a big advancement that public administration will benefit from as it provides safety and protection of its patients personal information. Security protection among its patients is important and will continue to make advancements to enhance public administration in the future going forward. The only downfall to this might be information being leaked but with technology advancements it would help keep these issues from becoming bigger problems. Overall the advancements we have talked about throughout the seamster would benefit the effects on public administration going forward.
