Week 13 Journal (Compare Early Modern Movements)

For this assignment, I want you to put everything listed below in a single Word Document.

I want you to start off by comparing and contrasting Realism, Impressionism and Post-Impressionism as seen through these examples:

Gustav Caillebotte, Paris: a Rainy Day, 1877

Claude Monet, Wild Poppies, 1873

Van Gogh, Night Cafe, 1888

Part 1. Explain what sorts of things the works all have in common. But then focus more attention on how each work of art fits in well with its artistic movement. For example, tell what what is typical of Realist art and how Daumier's work is a good example of that.

Part 2. I want you to take 3 photographs inspired by these time periods:

· One photograph should represent Realism. Take a photo of your day to day activities like the Realists did.

· Another photograph should look like Impressionism. Use an app or filters and alter the look of your photograph to mimic the Impressionists.

· Finally, a 3rd photo that looks like Post-Impressionism. Again make use of an app, filters, Photoshop, whatever you have to do this. You could even load the photo into like Microsoft Paint and color over it! These artists were all about expressionism.

Put the photos into a Word document and then briefly describe for each one how it matches the goals, ideas, etc. of the time period it corresponds with.

I just wanted to point out that Realism might not be what you think it is. Realism (from the 1800s) is not an attempt to make a painting look like a photograph. In fact, it has nothing to do with style. It has to do with the subject matter. I would highly suggest that you read up on Realism in your textbook. And then also take a look at this explanation of it as well:

Realism does not refer to an artist's ability to make a painting look like a photograph. Rather Realism refers to the subject matter. Rather it is a work of art that shows reality in terms of the struggles, everyday goings-on and issues that people dealt with. So, an artist that shows a depiction of people working hard in the fields might be an example of Realism. It doesn't have anything to do with style. So, just be careful when you write our papers that you have an understanding of that first.
