Chapter 11. Labor Unions and Collective Bargaining 

Overview:

This historical evolution of labor unions that depicts why labor unions exist and why some employees choose to join labor unions initiates this chapter. It is this foundation that builds the organizational structure of unions and their legal impact upon unions, as well as management. As noted, labor unions remain and continue to strive for a greater presence in workplaces across the nation. While labor unions have evolved, their beginnings and their relationship with management created the need for a legal and respective collective bargaining approach. A summation of how bargaining units are formed and the collective bargaining process are provided along with grievance and union decertification procedures.

Learning Objectives:

1. Explore the role of labor unions.

2. Describe the basic union structure and organized      labor’s strategies for a stronger movement.

3. Discuss laws affecting collective bargaining.

4. Summarize the formation of bargaining units and the collective bargaining process.

5. Describe the grievance procedure in a union environment.

6. Explain union decertification.

1. Discuss the five reasons that have contributed to the trend of decline in unionization.

2. Discuss three major factors that contribute to an employee's decision to join a union.

What is collective bargaining? What is involved in the collective bargaining process?

The assignment is to answer the question provided above in essay form. This is to be in narrative form and should be as thorough as possible. Bullet points should not to be used. The paper should be at least 1.5 - 2 pages in length, Times New Roman 12-pt font, double-spaced, 1 inch margins and utilizing at least one outside scholarly or professional source related to human resource management. The textbook should also be utilized. Do not insert excess line spacing. APA formatting and citation should be used.
