This course has some interest in me from the beginning as I have an interest in doing research much later in my career. I have been doing research papers and assignments for the better part of a decade now, but it never really clicked on all the steps and the process to take with research papers until this course. Unlike my previous classes, I was allowed to choose a topic that interested me instead of being assigned the subject. This allowed me to formulate a hypothesis, choose a framework, and review the literature to guide the research project. I managed to analyze the existing national and international studies related to the efficacy of the face masks, which broadened my viewpoint and informed the scope of my research.
I also was able to understand ethical issues and laws governing research participation and data management better. It enhanced my Tuskegee retrospective research incident understanding of the bodies responsible for regulating research participation, more specifically, the purpose of Institutional Review Boards (IRBs). Though I found problems related to the statistical part of the proposal, I was in a position to seek assistance and understand the whole process. I enjoyed expanding my knowledge base beyond the comfort of our class, which enhanced the knowledge gained in the course. I felt proud to explore a disease that is at the heart of nursing practice today. I would not have known much of these epidermic if I did not choose to explore the course. I also believe that research is the solution to all the problems and puzzles engulfing the nursing practice, like the efficacy of face masks. There should be no assumptions in nursing, and everything decision made, or practice adopted need to be based on research evidence. I am glad I was able to meet my objectives.
