· The purpose of quality initiative programs in any healthcare setting is to compare current performance levels with the existing ratings of either the home facility, or top facilities providing the same or similar care in a specific area. When a facilities ratings benchmark lower when compared to another organization, the facility may create a system-wide quality performance initiative program to improve those weak areas. An example of a system-wide quality initiative I have been a part of is the purposeful rounding initiative. As a part of the nursing team, aides and nurses are responsible for checking on patients regularly every 1-2 hours, depending on what the individual care plan calls for. The intention of purposeful rounding is to ensure that on every round upon departure of the room the patient is left with all their vital necessities within arm’s reach and is content for an extended period of time. A patient’s necessities may include phone, glasses, bedside table, and most importantly their call bell. Purposeful rounding was implemented to reduce inpatient falls as well as the reduction of call bell use. The use of the call bell is encouraged; however, the goal is to anticipate the patient’s needs before they become a complaint or grievance. The program has shown a decrease in inpatient falls. Patient satisfaction scorecards have also provided evidence of higher patient satisfaction ratings upon hospital discharge. Unfortunately, this does not prevent negative patient outcomes because falls will still occur and patients will still be discharged unsatisfied with the services/care received. Thank you.
