Assignment Questions:
Answer each of the following questions (150-250 words each depending on the nature of the question). If you go a bit over it’s okay. Each response must include at least one reference (citation) with page numbers from the materials assigned using proper MLA formatting.
1) How did Vichy’s slogan Famille, Travail, Patrie (family, work, fatherland) reflect the major social ideals and values of the National Revolution? In other words, what did Pétain hope to accomplish with the 'National Revolution'? Why could Jews not be included in this national project? In your response, be sure to define what the National Revolution was and specify and explain clearly the major ideals and values involved.
2) Talk about the Dreyfus Affair and its impact on French society and anti-Semitism. Be sure to explain who Alfred Dreyfus was and the accusations made against him, etc. Please provide important dates and places.
3) Describe briefly the nature of the historical relationship of France with its Jewish population. What was the level of integration that Jews achieved in France? Was there a long history of anti-Semitism in France? Please provide important dates and/or names of historical periods that you are referring to in your answer. Examples: medieval, early 18th century, before and after the French Revolution until...., early or late 19th century, etc.
4) How did the Vichy government come about, that is, how did the 'Third Republic' come to an end and how did Pétain become the head of the 'French State' (l'Etat Français)? What was Vichy's relationship to the Nazi the occupying forces in terms of occupation, autonomy, and collaboration? Take into consideration the differences and similarities of the two zones of France. Be specific in dates. (Refer to Zuccotti, p.43 for at least the first part of the answer.)
5) What were the anti-Jewish laws decreed by the Vichy government and what were their repercussions? Be specific with enough detail, in stating the prohibitions and restrictions in the various fields of employment in both the public and private sectors of the economy. Make sure to focus on the Statut des Juifs and the Spoliation laws (Aryanization of Jewish property); and differentiate between the German anti-Jewish ordinances imposed on Jews in the occupied zone and the Vichy anti-Jewish laws that were imposed in both zones. Be specific in dates. Do not focus on Pre-Vichy anti-immigration or anti-Jewish laws.
