9 introductory concepts/words
Following concepts in textbook (Gerald O’Collins, Catholicism: A Very Short Introduction: Oxford University Press, 2017), page xiii.

2. CARDINAL
A very high official in the Catholic Church.
You are almost always a priest and a bishop, before being appointed “cardinal” by the Pope.
CARDINAL
It is a life-time appointment.
There are over 200 cardinals in the Catholic Church: they belong to the “College” of cardinals

3. CURIA
The Curia USED TO BE, in ancient Rome, a gathering of the leaders of tribes.
CURIA
TECHNICALLY, a CURIA is a gathering of Church government at any level: a diocese, for example, has a “curia” of the officials of the diocese. SEE THIS LINK: https://www.dioceseofscranton.org/directory/vicar-general-and-moderator-of-the-curia/
But MOSTLY it is used to refer to the Central Administrative Unit of the Catholic Church, in Rome, which helps the Pope govern the Church. That is the ROMAN CURIA.

CURIA
Why is there this mixture of Church and Government?
When the ancient Roman Empire fell apart (400’s), there was a period of CHAOS…no central government, no local government, what a nightmare.
The CHURCH was one of the institutions which was large and organized, and it sort of picked up some of the slack with its own administrative structure.
CURIA
There are different GROUPS OR CONGREGATIONS, 9 of them, in the Roman Curia. Some of them focus on:
Doctrine (Teachings )
Worship/Sacraments
Relations with the Eastern Catholic Churches
Missions
….and so on

5. ARCHBISHOP
An arch-bishop has his own diocese, just like a bishop…
…but he also is the administrative head over several other bishops.
ARCHBISHOP
For example, our archbishop lives in Philadelphia.
Philadelphia has its own DIOCESE, or arch-diocese:

The archbishop for this area is Bishop Nelson Perez.
He oversees the administrative district which contains our diocese, and others…
Allentown, Altoona-Johnstown, Erie, Greensburg, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, and Scranton

7. ECCLESIOLOGY: the study of the CHURCH
ECCLESIOLOGY: one example
Theologian AVERY DULLES wrote a famous book called: “MODELS OF THE CHURCH”
We started this entire power-point by looking through the lens of ONE of these models: the INSTITUTIONAL MODEL. We’ve been looking at the structure of the Church…the “Church as Institution”
ECCLESIOLOGY
THERE ARE OTHER WAYS OF LOOKING AT CHURCH: HERE IS A SLIDE-SHOW (ON-LINE)

CONCERN FOR THE POOR
He went there because refugees fleeing Syria ended up there.
He arranged for 3 Muslim couples and their children to go to Vatican City to live, and he welcomed them personally when their plane arrived (O’Collins, Very Short Intro)

Concern for the Poor: Example 2
Holy Thursday: the Thursday before Easter Sunday.
Jesus’ disciples had just asked him: WHO IS THE GREATEST?
Jesus’ answer: those who love and serve.
And then Jesus washed his own disciples’ feet.
