Week 7 Discussion

1. Discuss what performance management is and how it influences effective teams.

Performance management refers to strategies to improve and maintain team member’s performance towards achieving set goals at the individual and organizational levels. These interventions motivate teams to commit their efforts towards a mutually set goal, improves their morale, and enhance overall team effectiveness. Performance management utilizes team members’ capabilities and potential to improve their productivity.

1. Review table 11.1, define leadership behaviors (in your own words) and note which behaviors are beneficial at specific organizational activities (example: project planning, leading coworkers, etc…). Please note at least five organizational activities and be specific when responding.

Leadership behaviors refer to traits and actions that qualify individuals as influential leaders, enabling them to guide, direct, and influence others to attain set goals. In an organization, leadership behaviors affect various organizational activities such as project planning, recruiting new teams, directing others, resource management, and reviewing project progress (Bratton, 2020). Leadership behaviors in project planning include goal-oriented and transparency. Leaders should focus on tasks that need to be accomplished for the project to be successful. Influential project leaders also must enhance transparency to ensure team members are open to each other and reduce potential risks. Leadership behavior in recruitment includes emotional intelligence, whereby influential leaders must understand the emotional factors of candidates. Leaders must also uphold integrity to choose the best candidates without being biased or favoritism. Leaders should possess communication and vision skills to communicate goals and develop effective strategies to achieve them effectively in directing others. Leadership behavior for resource management includes planning and motivation skills to prioritize meaningful tasks and keep team members motivated through rewards. Leaders should possess the knowledge to review project implementation and be dependable to initiate and implement action plans.

1. Note at least two organizational capabilities and compare and contrast each.

Organizational capabilities entail the skills and expertise possessed at individual and corporate levels, such as high employee engagement and inspiring leadership. Both employee engagement and inspiring leadership are vital in enhancing productivity and efficiency in an organization. Increased employee engagement keeps employees motivated and committed towards set goals (Sparrow, 2013). Inspiring leadership encourages employees and utilities their potential and capabilities to improve organizational performance. How can organizations excel in enhancing employee engagement and developing authentic leadership?
