Writing Tip: Show Your Scholarship

We bring this balance of self and shelf to higher education where we seek both to show ourselves to be scholars and to grow our scholarship.

Critical to this is becoming fluent in the academic dialect of APA formatting (APA stands for the American Psychological Association). APA formatting involves certain stylistic elements that we will require for your final paper (size 12 Times New Roman font, double spaced, one-inch margins). More importantly APA formatting is about how we reference published scholarship as well as our lived experience in our writing.

For your pre- and post-class assignments as well as your final paper, you must include two elements of APA formatting: 1) in-text citations, and 2) a reference list. We have provided all of the full APA references from in class in the pre- and post-class assignment descriptions. You only need to copy and paste those over to your assignment before submitting it.

Regarding in-text citations, we will have a series of writing tips across the quarter to support you learning to be fluent in communicating in the APA dialect.

For this week, you were given 10 resources in the Week 01 Pre assignment. We assigned four required readings: Education 251 (2020), Flyswithhawks (1996), hooks (1994), and McIntosh and Style (1997). You were then to pick two of the remaining six.

Please take five minutes right now to reflect on the readings you were assigned for this week and answer the following questions:

· What is a word or phrase (10 words or less) that resonated with you?

· Is that resonance based on being a window? Or a mirror?

· Tell the story of that resonance.

If it helps you, please review the model videos/writing samples provided by our teaching team with the Week 01 Pre assignment. Then go ahead and write your own responses to these questions. Please note that we are asking for only a word or a phrase from one of the sources. Once you have identified this, everything else you write is principally about your own lived experience for which that word or phrase from the resource was a window or mirror for you.

Once you have written out your response, again this doesn't need to take more than 5 minutes or 100 words or so, post your response to the discussion board. Please also read other people's posts and consider whether what they are saying - either about the resource or about their own lived experience - is a window or mirror for you. Post these thoughts as replies to their post if you are willing to connect with them and potentially continue the conversation.

You may note that this writing tip and what you post to the discussion board might include a revision or excerpt of your Week 01 Pre assignment. This is fine, as long as you continue to revise your writing and as long as you recognize that this post is to a wider and more public audience. Sharing our stories with your peers and our broader EDUC 251 community is part of our work together as well. You may also utilize this writing tip in completing your future pre-class assignments.
