Week 7: Adaptability
Skill #9: Lead and Plan for change by developing a process to manage change and using it to lead change events.
Lesson 1 of 3
Change Management
When you're nished changing, you're nished.
Benjamin Franklin
Adaptability means exibility, i.e., being open changing from idea to another. Change is often
not done on purpose. People think of the old adage when contemplating a new way of doing
something, “If it ain’t broke don’t x it.” It takes time, eort, and money to eectuate
change in business so when rapid change rears its ugly head many people and organizations
are left behind. Why this should be so is because adapting to change is usually seen by people
as negative (DiSalvo, 2017).
Change is not sought out and consequently adapting or being exible can be outside a
person’s comfort zone. Change may often come to an organization rather than the
organization actively seeking change. Ironically, the antidote to the reactive nature of change
is proactive planning. However, it is planning how to change not planning change for a
specic event.
A manager must be exible and openly plan for change.
Managers must accept that change is quick and constant in the world of business today.
Hence, being a good manager is to learn about the way change is likely to occur both within
their organization and marketplace and develop a change management planning process.
Managers must embrace the idea of taking steps to know the world in which they live and
work in order to bring a broader set of factors to decision making. Taking that same approach
to adaptability is wise. Embrace change proactively and learn the process of planning and
managing change.
According to DeSalvo (2017), changing behavior long-term is one of the most dicult
challenges we will face, and there are eight main reasons why it is so dicult to change
behavior. Read the entire article for more information about these eight reasons.
