Comparing Nursing Homes

For this week’s assignment, I used the CMS compare site to compare three different

nursing homes in my area. I typed in my zip code for Spanaway, Washington and the results were

a few pages of nursing homes. The nursing homes I decided to compare are Manor Care of

Tacoma Wa, LLC; Avamere Transitional Care of Puget Sound; and The Oaks at Lakewood. The

nursing homes I chose each had different ratings – five, four, and three stars respectively.

This compare site would be incredibly helpful from a consumer’s perspective because it

gives you the overall rating of the facility, practice, etc. along with a more in-depth explanation

of that rating. For instance, the report I received for the nursing homes I selected, showed me an

overview, which included the overall rating of each nursing home, their health inspections rating,

staffing rating, and quality of resident care rating. Those ratings were then broken down into

their own categories to provide me with more information about the nursing homes’ health

inspections, staffing, and quality of resident care. The overview also included information such

as the number of certified beds in the nursing home, whether they participate in Medicare and/or

Medicaid, the ownership type (profit or nonprofit), their legal business name, etc. Additionally,

the report even provided information such as fire safety and any penalties against the facilities.

Being given all this information as a consumer is so helpful towards choosing the right

facility, provider, etc. It’s similar to searching up reviews on restaurants, businesses, or even

items to purchase. This site really gives the consumer insight on the facility they are going to

give their business to, or most importantly, entrusting their loved ones with.
