Leadership Style
When doing this week’s reading, I found that I identified more with the leadership style
based on Theory Y and transformational leadership. The leadership style based on Theory Y is
more of a consultative /participative style that includes loose general supervision, trust, shared
decision making, extensive involvement of workers, open communication, and internal rewards
(Olden, 2019). Based on the type of worker, Theory Y managers may change their influence or
management style; they may manage with a more stern, authoritarian style for certain workers
(Olden, 2019).
Transformational leadership style involves inspiring and influencing workers by
“appealing to higher-level human needs of self-actualization and fulfillment” (Olden, 2019).
Transformational leaders encourage workers to perform at their best and strive to make the
organization better (Alloubani, Akhu-Zaheya, Abdelhafiz, & Almatari, 2019; Olden, 2019).
Transformational leaders have charisma, inspiration, intelligence, and individual consideration
(Olden, 2019).
I want to master these two leadership styles, because I feel that these are the
approaches that work best in the healthcare field. However, I do know that there are certain areas
I may need to work on or refine within both styles. These leadership styles define exactly how I
feel like I parent my children now, and how I would want to approach any management position
in the future.

Current Role
I am currently a stay-at-home mom to my two children – a 2-year-old and a 6-month-old.
Being a stay-at-home parent has actually challenged and improved many of my skills that I have
previously used as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) in a memory care unit, prior to having
children. As Wilkie (2015) states, being a stay-at-home parent requires skills that “prove valuable
in the workplace, such as patience, persistence, creativity, and reliability”. Kim (2016) mentions
in his article that being a mom gives you five important skills that are great for management –
patience, empathy, time management, the ability to build trust, and the ability to self-reflect. As a
CNA, prior to becoming a stay-at-home mom, it was important to possess these same skills
especially as I was working with patients who were memory impaired. I had to have patience,
empathy, and persistence while working with them as some of them proved to be difficult; I had
to get creative with the care of difficult patients; and I had to manage my time well to ensure I
was able to provide sufficient care for all of my patients. However, as a stay-at-home mom, these
skills have definitely been challenged and strengthened. As I said, I have a 2-year-old and a 6-
month-old, and it really takes a lot of patience to care for them 24/7. Being a stay-at-home mom,
I’ve definitely incorporated different managerial functions. For instance, I use the planning
function when planning out things for the day or week, such as our meals and activities, and even
now, as I try to potty train my 2-year-old.
Future Role
My desired future role is Heath Services Director. I chose this role because it’s a role in
which I would be able to manage the day-to-day operations of a facility and still help patients in
a bigger sense rather working with them hands-on. Health services directors/managers ensure

February 16, 2021 that the facility operates as smoothly as possible, and that is something I can see myself doing. It
was also appealing to me that the role of health services director has the flexibility of working in
various healthcare settings.
Future Healthcare Setting
My desire future healthcare setting is a skilled nursing facility. I chose this setting
because I have previous experience working in a couple different skilled nursing facilities and I
enjoyed my time working there. I like the setting and the work of helping a variety of patients,
whether it’s to help them long-term or even short-term to help them get better for an assisted
living type facility.
