Scheduling is vital to a skilled nursing facility (SNF) because the safety and physical,

mental, and psychosocial well-being of the residents is dependent upon the staff (Harrington,

Dellefield, Halifax, Fleming, & Bakerjian, 2020). It is necessary to ensure that the SNF is staffed

appropriately and adequately in order to properly meet the residents’ needs (Harrington et al.,

2020). Harrington et al. (2020) states that higher nurse staffing results in improved nursing home

quality. For instance, higher registered nurse (RN) staffing levels are linked to fewer pressure

ulcers, decreased infections, and lower mortality rates (Harrington et al., 2020). On the other

hand, inadequate staffing is shown to be linked to resident malnutrition, starvation, deterioration,

and hospitalization, as well as low activity participation (Institute of Medicine, 2001). The

Institute of Medicine (2001) also mentions that the stressful working conditions and heavy

workload of nursing assistants often results in inadequate time to provide quality care and was

actually found to be related to incidents of physical and psychological abuse of residents. It is

important to establish appropriate scheduling within a SNF to ensure high quality care to

maintain the well-being of all residents.

Staffing Issues and Plan Overviews

Staffing Issue 1: Scheduling adequate number of nurses (registered nurses, licensed nurses,

nursing assistants) in relation to the facility’s resident census

Plan for Staffing Issue 1: Work with nurse and scheduling managers and admissions team to

keep the facility’s resident census updated – taking into account any admissions or discharges,

schedule adequate number of nursing staff for resident census, keep track of number of staff

calling-in sick (if any), and cancel or reassign staff to avoid over-staffing or call and schedule

any necessary replacements for staff that called in sick.

February 9, 2021 Staffing Issue 2: Equal nursing assignments or workloads

Plan for Staffing Issue 2: Work with nurse manager and nursing staff to keep track of facility’s

resident census and equally divide the number of residents between the staff – keeping in mind

the needs of each resident (a total-assist resident would require more help than a resident who is

mostly independent).

Staffing Issue 3: Avoiding, as best as possible, any instances of short staffing

Plan for Staffing Issue 3: Work with nurse and scheduling managers and nursing staff to

implement and enforce a call-in policy, in which staff are required to call-in no later than 3 hours

before their scheduled shift, to allow for adequate time for managers to find a replacement; make

sure there is always 1-2 staff that are on-call; call and inform on-call staff that they are scheduled

to work; and if necessary, ask any staff currently on duty if they would like to work a double

shift.
