Why College Should Be Free For Everyone

When we think about going to college most students may think about finally becoming a

responsible adult, getting their degree, and possibly expanding their education even further.

Students go through years and years of school for a degree ,but most are left with debt. Student

loans are the highest growing loans. People start to pay less and less on their loans and can’t

seem to catch a break. When the student loan balance is so high there are some that keep racking

up the debt and go back to school to further their education and just push the years on repaying

the loan back. Student loans can affect people’s lives because if they can not make their payment

then they would have to resort to other options such as asking for help from others, getting a

second mortgage, having to get late fees, and so much more. Education should be free or offered

at a much lower cost for several reasons.

Why does FASFA just go off of someone's parent’s income when they are unaware whether

or not they are paying for their child’s education?

When I went to a different school I remember struggling because FASFA would go off of

my parent’s income and not mine. I remember being heart broken and frustrated because my

parents were not helping me financially, it was all on me. There are grants that students could

possibly receive ,but not all receive them. Paying for your education should not be a worry

anyone should have. Education is very important. Parents or guardians take care of their child’s

education when they are in elementary, middle, and high school. There are times where parents

don’t save money for their kid’s education so then what? If education were free there would also

be children who would take advantage of their resources and would probably have years of

schooling ,but would lack the motivation due to not seeing financial consequences of continuing

to be in school. School would be overenrolled and that could lead to schools being understaffed

and schools being overcrowded.

Why is education so important if it is a costly achievement?

There are many people in the world who are successful and may or may not have had a

college education. Are they frowned upon for not having a degree? If someone can’t pay for

their student loans why would they even bother extending their education further? It doesn’t

mean they are in poverty, it means the amount the government wants for repayment doesn’t work

with the expenses the person may already have. Careers that don’t require a degree are frowned

upon because people think that that person doesn’t have anything else to fall back on. We think

about financial security with a degree even though it is just a piece of paper.

Why is education so expensive in the United States when there are several countries that

offer free or education at a low cost?

When we look at the comparison of universities in the US and other countries there are

several differences. Universities are expensive because they have meal plans, they have sports,

equipment, faculty, and more. Think about why community colleges are cheaper than a known

major university. There are many students that don’t know what they want to do just yet when

they enroll into college and then unfortunately drop out due to not wanting to rack up loans into

something that they are not interested in.
