Overview
For this week’s journal, I will be considering what I find to be the most valuable
and important idea in the intro to chapter 5. I will be finding the important concepts and
elaborate on them and talk about my beliefs.
Important Idea
I will be choosing learning outcome 5.1: “Identify the reason or reasons, explicit
or implicit, a person is using to argue that a claim is true or probably true.” (Facione &
Gittens, 2016). I find that this is an important aspect of analyzing arguments to explore
the reasonings within given claims. Listening is the first battle and step in order to
process and understand what someone is saying. However, the next step is picking out
and identifying reasons in order to understand one’s argument.
Critical Thinking
In Chapter 4, the authors dive into difficulties that can arise when analyzing
statements. Context can be a barrier that can affect interpretation. Context is how one
precedes and intends the delivery of the message (Facione & Gittens, 2016). Context
gives background and framework for setting the narrative. It can help the audience better
understand the true message being delivered and serves almost as clues. If the context is
tricky to understand, the analysis can be skewed. Another concept discussed in Chapter 4
that can get in the way of interpretation is vagueness. The authors define problematic
vagueness as, “the characteristic of a word or expression having an imprecise meaning or
unclear boundaries in a given context or for a given purpose.” (Facione & Gittens,
2016). Having this vagueness can leave people to misunderstand or be confused about
what the message is. It can leave the person feeling confused or lacking. The authors

noted 5 ways to overcome this problematic vagueness: contextualizing, asking for
clarification, negotiating, qualifying and stipulating (Facione & Gittens, 2016). These are
some difficulties that can cause barriers in analyzing statements. To analyze can
definitely be more difficult than giving an opinion, because it is so much more intricate
and is a vital skill in critical thinking. In the lesson for Week 2, it’s important to limit
distractions as well. In order for communication to occur, it requires a message sender,
and a message receiver. However, anything that interferes in the process of clear transfer
can be considered “noise” (Barkauskas, 2020).
Beliefs
I have beliefs that I hold dear to me, and I will be testing one of these beliefs out
by asking myself “why” questions, and layering them. I am a huge animal lover, and one
day hope to be financially stable enough to foster them. One of my beliefs is that animals
(in this example I will use dogs) should be cared for. My claim is that dogs should be
cared for.
Layer 1: Dogs are a big responsibility, and they have needs just as we do.
Layer 2: It is important to be a good animal parent because they depend on us, due to
them being domesticated animals.
Layer 3: Dogs have basic needs as well as complex needs. Dogs need food, clean water,
space and exercise, and love. Some more complex needs can include vet bills and other
extra costs such as toys, parks, crates, etc. Dogs are not cheap, and therefore a much
larger responsibility than some might imagine.
Layer 4: Dogs need a certain amount of attention, and when that is not given, that can
cause many issues. They have so many needs that require our attention and detail.

Owning a dog can be a big task, but they need our help in order to thrive to live the best
life that they can possibly live. If dogs did not have us to take care of them, they can
contract diseases in the streets, they can starve, and become dirty (matted, flees, etc.).
Owning a dog is a large responsibility and it should not be taken lightly. Dogs are just a
small part of our lives, but we are all of theirs.
