COMPONENT A – Kaltura Presentation

1.0: Outline:

A new six-storey student accommodation building is to be constructed to the west side of the UWE Frenchay campus. The building is rectangular in plan, approximately 75 m long by 15 m wide. The long axis of the building is aligned north-south. It can be assumed that the building is sufficiently far from other buildings so as to be considered fully-exposed on all elevations.

The elevations will be clad with an external wall insulation system (render-oninsulation), with a series of 1.2 m by 1.2 m opening light windows set into the walls at appropriate intervals.

The façade contractor has offered five kinds of opening window, each having a single large opening light:

· A top-hung (hinged) outward opening casement;

· A top-hung (friction stays) window;

· A bottom-hung (hinged) inward-opening casement;

· A horizontal-pivot window;

· An inward opening tilt-before-turn window.

The window will be installed with the outermost face of the frame set 10 mm back from the external face of the render. The windows will be fitted with suitable key-operated hardware to limit the maximum opening to 100 mm except for cleaning.

You have been appointed as a facade consultant to advise on the selection of an appropriate type of window. The University is concerned that students will leave the windows open overnight, and that an unexpected rain shower could lead to water ingress and damage to wall finishes and carpets.

Put together a Kaltura presentation, 20 slides maximum, and 12-15 minutes in length, to explain:

(a) The nature of the openings that will occur for each type of window when in the open (restricted) position (30 marks – please use sketches to illustrate what you mean);

(b) The relative amount of water that could come in through the openings for each type of window (allowing for a light breeze – where there are multiple openings, consider each individual opening separately) (20 marks);

(c) The steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of water ingress through those openings (for each opening in each type of window) in terms of:

i. modifying the design of the framing system (10 marks);

ii. modifying the design of the wall around the window (10 marks); iii. modifying the position of the window in the opening (10 marks); (d) The ranking of the five types of window from least likely to admit water when open down to most likely to admit water when open (10 marks).

4.0: Submission Documents and Format:

Your answer is to be in the form of a Kaltura presentation (12-15 minutes duration) supported by a PowerPoint presentation (20 slides maximum)

5.0: Assessment Criteria:

You will receive unconfirmed marks and written feedback individually. The period for providing feedback will not normally exceed 20 working days (excluding University closure days) following the deadline for submission of the assessment concerned. This period may be shorter or longer for some forms of assessment. Where the period is greater than 20 working days, students will be informed of the deadline and the rationale for the extension. Outcomes (marks) which have not been confirmed by an examining board shall be considered as unconfirmed.
