Pornography: Should it be censored?

Introduction

By definition, censorship is the prohibition of information that is determined by the governmental authorities to be inappropriate, sensitive, harmful or misleading (censorship, n.d.). The main reasons for censoring include public security, to control pornography and hate speech, to guard exposed groups, to encourage or contain political views, and to prevent any insult or defamation. Censorship occurs in almost all platforms of media, such as speech, films, prints and internet. By definition, pornography is the printed or visual material containing the explicit description or display of sexual organs or activity, intended to stimulate sexual excitement (pornography, n.d.). While the worldwide web was growing, cyber-porn was easily accessed by anyone, including children. The US congress attempted to put a limit for this issue by imposing the Communications Decency Act (CDA) in 1995 (Roleff, 2002). Having access to pornography does indeed negatively affect the adults psychologically, mentally and physically. As a result, I believe that this topic is crucial because those alterations in the state of men’s bodies and mindsets lead to a general objectification of women, resulting in men being more aggressive towards them. In addition, child pornography is another serious issue that is a result of pornography consumption, which contributes in the instability of societies. Thus, my topic should be of interest to the public, especially to adults, to reduce the rate of violent crimes.

Working thesis/research question(s)

Primary research question: What are the effects of pornography on teenagers and should pornography be censored?

Thesis statement: Pornography should be censored due to its negative physical and psychological impacts, social impacts and its contribution towards violence.
