Section Prompt Response Chapters 1-2 Make a prediction about what the tale of Phoebe
Winterbottom, her mother, and the lunatic will be about.
Chapters 3-4 Share your thoughts and feelings about the charac- ters so far- do you see any character types yet?
Chapters 5-6 What can we infer about Sal’s mom and dad from this memory?
Chapters 7-8 There are two (and sometimes even three) very different settings that are being described throughout the novel. List and describe them.
Chapters 9-10 Don’t judge a man until you’ve walked two moons in his moccasins includes our book title as well. Share what you think the meaning and significance of this message might be.
Chapters 11-12 Using the events from these two chapters, create some inferences about Sal, her mom, and her dad.
Chapters 13-14 Compare Phoebe and Sal. How are they alike? How are they different? You may include situation and personality traits.
Chapters 15-16 The voices change from hurry, rush to slow down in this section. How might this be an example of foreshadowing?

Section Prompt Response Chapters 17-18 Create a theory about what may have happened to
Sal’s mother.
Chapters 19-20 Make a prediction about what has happened to Mrs. Winterbottom.
Chapters 21-22 Sal and Ben both represent their souls as a maple leaf inside a circle. What might these pictures symbolize?
Chapters 23-24 Develop more detail about the three different settings that have been described so far.
Chapters 25-26 Sal has inferred why Phoebe is acting the way she is. Build your own inference about why Phoebe is acting this way.
Chapters 27-28 Because of the two different plot lines throughout the novel, there are many conflicts. List the conflicts that are happening throughout the story. Circle the ones that are most problematic for the characters.
Chapters 29-30 Analyze Sal’s thinking to determine why finding Phoebe’s mother has now become so important to her.
Chapters 31-32 Make an inference about why Phoebe might be avoiding Sal. Can you make a personal connection here?

Chapters 35-36 Make an inference about what is going on between Mrs. Winterbottom and the lunatic.
Chapters 37-38 Discuss how the plot of Phoebe and Mrs. Winterbottom and Sal and her mom parallel one another.
Chapter 39 Write your reaction to the fact that Mrs. Partridge is the one placing the notes.
Chapters 40-41 Write your prediction about who the lone survivor is. Explain your thinking.
Chapters 42-43 Write the climax of the plot and argue why you believe this is the plot climax of the novel. Some ar- gue that this story has more than one climax; write about whether you agree or disagree with this idea.
Chapter 44 Analyze the conclusion of the novel. Do you think it makes sense? Do you believe the characters have found closure? Why or why not?
