Evidence-based Decision Making Program Transcript

Evidence-based practice is constructed much like a 3-legged stool. Decisions based on EBP are supported by best evidence, clinical expertise and patient preferences and values.

The three components of EBP are equally important, and the strength of the decision support relies on incorporation of all three components. Ignore or omit any one of them and the result is something unstable, with outcomes less than optimal.

Once an EPB practitioner discovers the relevant body of evidence from the external literature, the next step is to combine that evidence with the other two elements – clinical expertise and patient preferences and values – to make the best decision about best practice in the organization.

A focus that incorporates all three facets of evidence-based practice helps ensure solid footing for effective decisions and helps decision-makers confidently reach high for the achievement of desired outcomes.
