Electronic espionage can be a large threat to any organization, or government entity large and small. Electronic espionage is any unauthorized criminal access to sensitive systems and information with the sole purposing of obtaining economic, commercial, or political advantage (. This threat has increased over the past few decades from the rise in dependency on internet and computer systems for almost all aspects of the business, from storing information to telecommunication. These threats can originate from disgruntled employees, media outlets, investigators, or criminal attackers that may be seeking financial gain or cause financial loss to the business. Organizations must have a set of effective counter measures in place to protect themselves from electronic espionage.
The first step in creating counter measures for electronic espionage is to conduct a formal risk assessment to identify vulnerabilities and needs for asset protection. Once the potential risks and what is most valuable to the organization are identified, policies should be put into place to prevent and detection attackers. These policies should be clearly written and available for all employees to view and understand. A multiple layered approach would be used to protect our sensitive information. First, utilizing cyber security software, anti-virus and firewall software. Valuable data would be stored separately from the corporate network, and employee access to this data would be limited to a need to know basis. Keeping employees well educated will keep them from "mistakenly" helping an attacker gain information to data. Employees would need to stay current and information on all new methods of electronic and computer espionage.
