When a business is spied on regardless of their organization size or function it is known as business espionage. As opposed to corporate espionage which generally occurs between corporations spying on other corporations. Business espionage can occurs through a few different methods. Spies becoming employees so they are able to have access to private information or steal information. Cyber attacks are used to gain information to private data.  Hidden video or audios devices can used be used to ease drop on day to day business operations.  It is estimated that business espionage  in the United States costs around $1.7 trillion annually (Wimmer, n.d). The threat of business espionage can come from many different sources that can include governments, competitors, criminals, and greedy or disgruntled employees.

Between 1989 and 1997 Ten Hong Lee, as Taiwanese businessman, along with his company Four Pillars stole trades secrets from the company Avery Dennison. Avery Dennison being one of the nations biggest manufacturers of adhesive products. Ten Hong Lee, who was an actually employee of Avery Dennision, was paid over $160,000 over an eight year period to try to steal information regarding adhesive formulas owned and developed by Dennison and give them to the CEO of Four Pillars (1997). This is an examples of a spy acting as an employee to steal information.
