Chapter 17 Sections 1-3
Directions: This week, we are going to jump into Chapter 17, which covers the Progressive Era. There are many famous names and important concepts covered in this chapter, so to help keep them all straight, we’re going to walk through the chapter together. I will tell you what pages/sections to read, and ask questions along the way. You will have spaces to type in your answer or you may create a separate document, as long as you include the question. You will submit this note sheet for a grade, and you can also use it as a study tool later on. Please be sure that each response is clear and specific. The more details the better!
Let’s get started!
As we just learned, industrialization, urbanization, and immigration brought a host of benefits to America. However, they created many challenges and social problems too. As a result, a movement called Progressivism evolved. Progressives believed that new ideas and honest, efficient government could bring about social justice.
1. Take a look at pages 548-549. Progressives shared many common beliefs. List four beliefs they shared in common (/8 points):

Surprisingly, it was journalists for local papers and publications that really exposed many injustices and social problems. In fact, they earned the nickname muckrakers. A muckrake is a tool used to clean manure out of stables--- essentially, these writers were bringing out the ugly truth!
3. Read pages 552-553. How did the Progressives work to help the urban poor? List at least three ways. (/6 points):
BIG CHANGES FOR WOMEN
During this era, women made great progress as well. Women’s roles in society began to change so much that they eventually earned the right to vote! The right to vote is known as suffrage. I know it sounds confusing, because it sounds like suffrage and suffering go hand in hand—but they don’t.
Read pages 557-562. Then complete the following questions. (/20 points)
1. Explain how each of the following people changed the lives of women. Please use complete sentences. The responses must be descriptive and specific, (who are they, what did they accomplish, what is the name of the accomplishment, what did it allow).
MINORITIES TAKE ACTION
As women were making gains, discrimination against minorities continued. African Americans, Latinos, Catholics, Jews and other new immigrant groups worked hard to help themselves. Their efforts would set the stage for the civil rights era in a few decades. They worked hard to combat social problems and discrimination.
Read pages 564-568. Then, complete the following questions. Please use complete sentences (/12 points)
1. What attitudes did most Progressives hold about minorities and immigrant groups?
2. Why did African Americans and other decide it was time to organize against discrimination?
3. Other minority groups had to defend their rights too. How did Asian Americans and Native Americans defend their rights?

· Since God's moral order is designed for the good of humans and all of society, and humans are responsible for their actions, was the stock market crash inevitable because of those actions? Why or why not?
· Or was the crash separate from man's actions? How?
· What can you personally learn from this situation?
R, Anthony: It probably was because we are greedy selfish people who only want to help ourselves.
I think it could have been God's doing because that would have been our punishment for being selfish and greedy.
I can learn that we should be kind to others and not selfish for or own wants and help others with their needs.
