One measure institutions can take is keeping their browser secure by encrypting their data. To protect online transactions, encryption software scrambles information sent over the internet.

Another method is through the use of security software by installing anti-virus software, anti-spyware software, and a firewall. This provides protection against intrusions and infections that can compromise computer files or passwords by installing security patches for operating systems and other software programs (FTC, 2012).

The United States should adopt education campaigns about basic security measures because of the value of privacy these days. For example, nearly 75 percent of Americans feel it is “extremely” or “very” important that companies have “easy-to-understand,” accessible information about what personal data is collected about them, how it is used and with whom it is shared. Furthermore, consumers will place more trust in a business or organization that respects their privacy. In addition, people are more likely to purchase products and services from a company they trust (CSIAC, n.d.).
