The 2017 Equifax data breach is one of the biggest known cyber incidents to this day. Equifax failed to heed warnings from the Department of Homeland Security to patch its systems which left them unprotected to the known and critical vulnerabilities of the Apache Struts software. The C-suite perspective was along the lines that patching, and downtime, equates to lost revenue. (Vigna, 2019). The old saying “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is exactly what was ignored and resulted in this incident which eventually cost the company $1.4 billion and affected 150 million Americans. (Hurt, 2019).
