1. I truly enjoyed reading your post regarding Clearinghouse for Learning. What do you think is meant when said that "From a practice perspective, servant leadership is first made conscious of the fact that it’s all about serving and not merely serving"? What is the organization referring to or the difference between "all about serving and not merely serving"?

2. An organization "in which characteristics of servant leadership are displayed through the organizational culture and practiced by the leadership and the workforce" is Chick-Fil-A. "Since 2001, Cathy has served as President and COO of the 1,480-plus unit chain. He represents the next generation of leadership for the company founded by his father, S. Truett Cathy. When he took over as President, Cathy defined his role in the company as, "I work in customer service." He instills the concept of servant leadership into his everyday behavior" (Truscore). The company has a retention rate of around 95 to 97 percent and has an essential guiding principle. They also effectively use the recruitment of talent, which depends on the qualities of character, competency, and chemistry assessment—they nurture their employees and maintain honesty for the sake of their performance. The COO explained, "If we have to keep telling people what to do, we're not modeling the behavior ourselves, if we are living it every day, we don't need to talk about it." (Truscore). A key characteristic of a servant leader is the desire to serve.

3. While Marriott does not make it clear in their mission statement that they are a company that values servant leadership, looking at the core values makes it clear where they stand. Their first core value is "putting people first", which is a significant component of servant leadership. It is not just putting their customers first, but valuing the overall well being and happiness of their staff. They are looking at them as people, not employees. they also list "serving the world" as a value. It is even more obvious that this is a servant leadership principle. While the company values their employees, they expect employees to put others before them and help the world be a better place.

4. Statement: Fortune Best is committed to creating a business culture where leaders are treated with respect and dignity. At Fortune Best, we are aware that servant leadership is key to improved service. Our vision is to establish a high performing environment where all individuals can reach their best

Question: Do you think that statement should include some specific traits that will articulate some values? Why or why not?

5. I chose headstart. This is actually the name I came up with when I eventually open up my child care center and I really will need a mission statement.

A head start on learning is a head start in life. Here at Up Next Headstart we are dedicated to educating and empowering our children and their families for a successful and healthy lifestyle.

6. The organization in Fortunes' best companies to work for with servant leadership that I chose is Whole Foods Market. When I first discovered Whole Foods Market, I fell in love with it. They were intentional with the kind of products they sold as well as creating an atmosphere of tranquility, healthy, and acceptance. Every employee I came across was helpful and welcoming. It was clear to me that Whole Foods had values based on the way my experience was, shopping in the store, and interactions with their employees. Whole Food Market has a mission to help nourish people and the earth. Their goal is to be an example to other food retailers to sell and possibly produce fresh and organic ingredients and produce for the health of people and the planet. This mission is selfless and aims towards people and not themselves. Their hopes aren't to gain popularity and show other retailers that there the best but to impact other retailers to do what they believe is right and reach that goal together. That is a real sign of a servant leader. Many companies try to copy the actions of servant leaders and never with the best intentions. Many organizations today have taken up the servant leadership ban-ner. It has become fashionable in certain circles to claim a connection to servant leadership or to training up servant-leaders (Dierendonck, 2010). Whole Foods starts there core values with confidence in presenting high-quality products that you can trust. They begin attempting to gain the people's trust with the products they sell; as a servant leader, producing high-quality isn't just about what you sell but how you lead. Being a high-quality leader is part of the aim here at whole foods to ensure excellence every time you pick up an item they can almost guarantee a fresh and organic product because that's what they strive to sell. I have been A frequent customer of whole food and love going their every time. It encourages me to try healthy eating and see what clean eating looks like.
