When it comes to smaller businesses, they certainly don’t have to break the bank to develop a cybersecurity program. The first thing would be to do a risk assessment. This serves many purposes for an organization, including reducing operational risks, improving safety performance and achieving objectives. By having some cybersecurity basics can go a long way. One very important factor is to train employees. Having cybersecurity best practices that they follow. It can include procedures on how to keep employee, vendor and customer information safe. Another step is for employees to create strong passwords, as well as having two factor authentication and sending out security tips as well. Also creating backups regularly. Backing up vendor information on a desktop as well as the cloud and use encryption and passwords to protect all important information. Limiting access is a great tool as well. Employees who have different positions have different access. Utilizing individual logins which helps with privileges. Another useful procedure is to secure the WiFi. Set it up so that employees don’t know the password. Then set up a separate WiFi for customers on a separate network to prevent unwanted people from joining the business WiFi. Another effective tool is using a VPN. This way no one can monitor the online activities.

All of these are effective ways if implementing some sound security practices while keeping the company aware of threats without having to spend a ton of money.
