Alternative systems and virtual environments are becoming more popular. That being said, testing technical controls, defensive software, and sensitive assets is vital. Backup systems are sometimes seen as a “back to basics” approach. (Abrams). Data protection needs to be understood in regard to where it resides and how it should be protected. Data identification is necessary. Creating a comprehensive backup and recovery strategy of critical data with a scheduled back up plan is key. Virtual machines are a great way to test software before an official deployment. You can perform regression testing, functional testing, and client-server applications. They also are a great tool to test the performance of new or updated features in real time. If a virtual machine crashes or something is misconfigured, there is no harm to the actual system that is already online. Once again, a company will talk about the risk of costs to have a virtual machine but in the end, they are saving money by avoiding compromises if caught early on.
