Questions: One of the goals of criminal sentencing is known as deterrence. There are actually two types of deterrence. General deterrence is meant to send a message to the world at large that there is a serious consequence to crime which should be considered and to discourage them from committing crime. The other, specific deterrence, is meant to teach offenders a lesson that will deter them from recommitting. Given the rate of recidivism (the alarmingly high rate at which offenders re-offend) is there such a thing as deterrent effect? Why or why not?
