Undergraduate research differs from graduate research in the independence in research process, time committed to the research and the maturity/details of the research paper. Undergraduate students maybe inexperience in research, so they need more step by step guidance in the research process and how to write an acceptable research paper. Some research assignments in my undergraduate school were done in groups so I did not fully responsible for completing every single part of the research. In graduate school, research are done more independently. Every submitted work has to be quality, accurate and properly cited. Guidance is minimal. Self-exploration and commitment to learning are critical in graduate research. Our work is not just an assignment, but it is a representation of our character.
An obvious example of the difference between the two is this course: introduction to graduate studies. I started undergraduate school with basics class required for my degree. There was no introduction to undergraduate studies. Some class will required a research paper submitted but I was taught the basic steps and what needs to be included in my paper. In graduate school, I started out with a class about the basis of graduate studies and how to research, evaluate sources to find reliable information and proper citation. This emphasizes the importance of academic honesty, quality and independence required of a graduate student.
